Time to invest in yourself!!
If you are reading this, and you are a photographer, or even a creative of any kind, I have a question for you, when was the last time (if ever!) you invested in yourself? I bet you have spent quite a bit of money investing in camera gear and lenses (well at least I have!) But as a completely self taught photographer it wasn't until last month that I finally invested in ME for a change and I booked a mentor session with the very talented Lauren from Love Her Wild Photography.
It can be hard to find your voice in this busy social media age, our minds are constantly flooded with the incredible work of others, it's easy to lose focus of what we want to say, and worst of all we begin to compare ourselves. Almost a year after starting my business I reached a point where I felt confident in my technical skills (although there is always more to learn of course!) but I was struggling with my brand identity, my head was starting to feel very crowded with feelings of self doubt and I was really unsure of the direction I wanted to take.
There is a lot you can learn on the internet, I basically taught myself how to use my camera by watching youtube and searching google! However, while these are great tools they can't really help you on a personal level and this is what I needed, someone I could really open up to and ask questions, pick their brains, ask their opinions and just have some uninterrupted time to talk all things photography with someone who actually cared!
After following Lauren's work for a while, and particularly after I met her in person when she took our beautiful family photos for us, I knew she was someone i could really connect with! So I made the decision to invest in myself and I booked a mentor session with her in the hope that she could help answer the difficult questions I had filling up my head. I also decided that it would be a great opportunity to shadow her on a photoshoot, and get all the insight into how she creates such magic with her clients!
I can honestly say that it was the best decision I have made for my business. At the time I left our mentor session with a fuller head than when I went in, because Lauren not only helped me unpack my head, but also introduced a whole bunch of new ideas and concepts for me to implement! So even though I walked away from that day feeling like my head might just explode because it was so full, at the same time it felt so much clearer and I am beginning to feel more confident in my work, and the ability to reach my goals.
I guess what I am trying to say is, yes the gear is important, and yes we all love shiny new toys!! But at the end of the day, you are your business so investing in yourself is worth so much more than a fancy new gadget. So if you have been thinking about finding a mentor, do it!! Reach out to someone you admire, someone you feel like you can open up to, and make time to ask them your burning questions, I promise you wont regret it.
I'm going to stop yakking on now, and leave you with some magic mama photos from my mentor session with Lauren xx
