As a Murwillumbah local, the cane fields are simply part of everyday life, stretching out beside the roads we drive on the school run, with the mountains sitting quietly in the distance and the sugar mill puffing away beyond them, or the cloud machine, as my daughter has always called it.
I have photographed plenty of families out here, and what I love most is how quickly the space seems to take the pressure off, because there is no need to keep children still, ask them to smile on cue, or force anything that does not feel natural. They can wander through the rows, stop to inspect whatever catches their eye in the dirt, run ahead, double back, and tuck themselves into Mum whenever they need to.

The photographs I usually love most happen once everyone forgets about the camera and settles into the rhythm of being together, when a small hand reaches for Mum’s skirt, a child disappears into the cane and comes racing back, or a blanket gets thrown into the air simply because it makes everyone laugh.
As the sun drops behind the mountains, the whole field changes, with the light turning warm, the cane beginning to glow, and the landscape feeling quiet and expansive in a way that makes everything slow down for a while.
