Best family Photoshoot Locations from the Gold Coast to Byron Bay
After years of photographing families across the Gold Coast, Tweed Coast and Byron Bay, I’ve found a handful of locations I return to again and again. Some have calm creeks for little ones, others have long open beaches or plenty of space for bigger kids to explore.
These are just a few of my favourites, not just because they look beautiful, but because they give families room to relax, move and enjoy being together.
Currumbin Beach and Currumbin Alley
Known for its iconic Elephant Rock, Currumbin Beach offers a mix of rocky outcrops and long stretches of sand. It's perfect for both playful family shots and serene moments during sunrise or sunset. The beachside creeks are fantastic for families with young children, offering shallow, calm waters that are safe for play. Nearby, Currumbin Alley offers sandy dunes, a calm creek, and ocean views, giving you the best of both worlds. This spot is great for families who want to enjoy a variety of natural settings in one location.
Miami Beach
Miami Beach has a long stretch of open sand with plenty of room for kids to run, explore and get their feet wet. It often feels quieter than some of the busier Gold Coast beaches, which makes it easier for families to relax without too much happening around them. The dunes, ocean and views towards Burleigh give us plenty of variety without needing to walk far. It’s especially beautiful in the soft morning light or later in the afternoon when the beach begins to quieten down.
Dreamtime Beach at Fingal Head
Possibly my favourite location to watch the sun as it rises behind the headland, Dreamtime Beach at Fingal Head is a serene and secluded spot perfect for capturing stunning family photos. The pristine sands and crystal-clear waters create a tranquil atmosphere that is ideal for both playful and intimate sessions. We can stay on the beach, or wander up to the headland and visit the lighthouse, adding a touch of adventure and variety to your photo session.
Cabarita Beach
Cabarita Beach has a long, open stretch of sand with plenty of room for kids to run, play and explore. It’s simple and spacious, without too many distractions, so the focus stays on your family. The wide beach and open sky are especially beautiful later in the afternoon when the light begins to soften.
Hastings Creek
The creek at Hastings Point is a beautiful option for families with young children or anyone wanting something calmer than an open beach. There’s shallow water to splash in, sandy banks to explore and plenty of room for kids to play without needing to direct them too much. Depending on the tide, we can stay beside the creek or wander towards the headland for a little more variety. It’s relaxed, easy and especially lovely in the softer afternoon light.
Hasting Point Headland
Hastings Point gives us a little bit of everything open beach, rocky edges, grassy areas and wide coastal views from the headland. Kids can run along the sand, search around the rocks or explore without the session feeling too structured. It can be exposed when the wind picks up, but on a calm afternoon the light from the headland and beach is beautiful, particularly around sunset.
Broken Head in Byron Bay
Just a stone's throw from Byron Bay, I love this spot for its serene atmosphere and stunning views. You can even spot the lighthouse in the distance! It's perfect for families who love the water, offering plenty of space for kids to splash, climb headlands, and explore rock pools. Golden hour photos here are pure magic, especially in the cooler months when the sky lights up with stunning hues.
Murwillumbah's Cane Fields
For a country vibe, you can't beat Murwillumbah's cane fields, especially at sunset. The golden hour casts a warm glow that creates a stunning backdrop against the distant mountains. It’s a picturesque setting that captures the rustic charm and peacefulness of the countryside, making it a favourite Gold Coast photo location.
Crystal Creek in Tweed Valley
Nestled in the Tweed Valley, Crystal Creek is one of my family's favourite spots in summer. With cool, clear waters and a rope swing, it offers both adventure and serenity. It's an ideal spot for families who love exploring natural beauty and want something a bit different from the usual beach scene.
