How to style your family

Gold Coast Family Photographer/ Southport

One of the most common questions I get asked, is what to wear for a family photo shoot. I totally get that it can be daunting but here are some key tips that I hope will help make it a fun experience for the whole family!

Comfort is Key
First and foremost, let's talk about the importance of feeling beautiful in what you wear. If you're not comfortable or feel self-conscious in your clothes, that unease will reflect in your photos. This golden rule applies to the entire family. As a mum of three strong willed girls, I understand the excitement they get from choosing their own outfits. While cohesive outfits certainly help tie the overall look and feel of the final images together, it's ultimately more important that everyone feels comfortable and has the opportunity for their personality to shine through!

Patterns and Colors: I encourage you to choose outfits that reflect your families personality and experiment with coordinating colours and patterns, but keep in mind, moderation is key. Select one statement-patterned piece (such as a beautiful flowy dress/jumpsuit/shirt) as the focal point and coordinate other family members' outfits with colors drawn from that pattern. If you prefer a softer neutral look, opt for muted and earth tones such as browns, mustard, yellows, dusty pinks, oranges, or earthy greens.

Texture and Movement: Add depth and interest to your outfits by layering various textures, such as linens, lace, or chunky knits. Clothing with movement, particularly in outdoor settings, can result in stunning photos, especially when there's a breeze. It adds a touch of spontaneity and captures the essence of your family in motion.

Consider Your Location:

Take a moment to envision the backdrop of your photo shoot. If we're heading to the beach, think about wearing your swimmers under your clothes or tossing them in your bag. There's something magical about capturing families taking a spontaneous swim on a warm summer evening that I absolutely adore!

For in home sessions you have the ultimate freedom to dress how you want, while a dress is always a classic choice, don't feel confined to it. If jeans or shorts align more with your personal style, go ahead and rock them. Opt for clothing that reflects what you'd naturally choose for an evening picnic or playtime down by the beach. While a classic linen shirt is a favourite go to for the dads, they have my full permission to wear a casual t-shirt or singlet if that’s what they prefer.

Now, if our session is set against the rustic charm of a farm or somewhere a bit off the beaten track, consider the practicality of comfy shoes. A trusty pair of boots not only complements the setting but ensures you're ready for whatever adventures unfold.

Things to Avoid: Steer clear of slogan/branded clothing, overly matchy outfits (blue jeans and white tees are a thing of the past!) and patterns or colors that clash. Comfort is key, so avoid anything that makes you feel uneasy, as it will be evident in the images.

Shoes Matter: Consider going barefoot for beach or home sessions for a relaxed vibe. When outdoors, choose footwear that complements your outfits and is easy to walk in.

Most importantly, have fun with the photoshoot and wear something that reflects your personality. These photos will be cherished for generations, so take the time to find outfits that capture your unique style. After all, the best family photos are the ones where everyone is authentically themselves.

In the end, the goal is not just to capture a moment in time but to encapsulate the essence of your family, the laughter, the love, and the unique bond that makes your family special. So, go ahead, embrace the process, and let your family's personality shine through in every frame.

Local Gold Coast mama, Madison is truly all over the style when it comes to choosing her children’s outfits (check out her instagram madison_raisingflowers), and I was all sorts of excited when her gorgeous family rocked for their photoshoot up in beautiful autumn tones and snuggly winter knits!! The orange and rust tones of their clothing creates the most amazing contrast against the blue of the ocean, and of course complements the golden sunset oh so perfectly!!
