Why Winter Is My Favourite Season

Sunrise Family Photography on the Southern Gold Coast

Winter is one of my favourite times of year for family sessions. The beaches are quieter, the light is softer, and there is something about an early morning by the ocean that encourages everyone to slow down. Without the heat of summer or the busy beaches, families can simply enjoy being together.

This session was the perfect reminder that the best photographs aren't created by asking children to smile at the camera. They happen while they're exploring the shoreline, splashing through the creek, racing across the sand or wrapping each other in a spontaneous hug. Rather than directing every moment, I like to give families the space to interact naturally, because those genuine moments are always the ones that mean the most.

Winter sunrises across the Gold Coast and Northern NSW are incredibly beautiful. The light is gentle, the colours are soft and the beaches often feel as though you have them entirely to yourselves. Even on mornings with dramatic clouds, the changing sky adds so much atmosphere and depth to every image, creating photographs that feel timeless rather than seasonal.

If you've been considering updating your family photos, don't let winter put you off. In many ways, it's my favourite season to photograph. With a warm jumper, bare feet and a sense of adventure, a quiet morning on the beach becomes less about having family photos taken and more about making memories together.

Sometimes all you need is an early morning, a quiet beach, and the people you love most.

If this kind of session feels like you, I’d love to hear from you. You can get in touch via my contact page to chat about maternity or family session across the Gold Coast, Byron Bay and surrounds.
