Session Guide

I’m so glad you’re here! This is this as your personal guide to plan your session. There’s no right or wrong place to start. Have a browse by clicking the links below !

I take an intentional documentary approach, with gentle guidance when it helps. I won’t rush you, pose your kids, or ask anyone to perform.

Smiling at the camera is always welcome, especially if those classic portraits matter to you. But they don’t lead the session, and I generally won’t stop children to ask them to smile at me.

Instead, I let kids lead. I give them space to play, explore, and move how they naturally do, while I follow and gently encourage you to stay connected with them, both physically and emotionally.

The moments I’m most drawn to happen outside of prompts. They’re reactions, not directions. A toddler climbing into your lap. A hand reaching for another without thinking.

Those are the moments I’m always watching for, and the ones that guide the way I photograph your session.

Before we get started, there’s one important thing I need you to know…

A woman and two children hugging on a sandy beach near the ocean at sunset.

Where to Go?

First up, we’ll decide where to go. The location really sets the scene, so start by thinking about places you love spending time as a family. From there, we can work out the best time that suits you.

  • The best locations are usually the ones that already mean something to you. The beach you always end up at. The creek your kids love jumping into. The place you go when you want to be together without overthinking the plan.

We’re lucky to have so many beautiful beaches and hinterland creeks to choose from, and chances are there’s already a spot your family feels at home in.

Some locations are open and expansive, with plenty of room to roam, run, and explore. Others are quieter and more tucked away, suited to slower moments and staying close. Whether it’s sand between your toes or a shaded creek bank, each setting offers space for movement, play, and genuine connection.

If you’re not sure what feels right, you can explore the full location guide, or reach out and we’ll choose something together that fits your family.

  • In-home sessions are some of the most meaningful sessions I photograph.

Your home is where your real life happens. The cuddles on the couch. Snacks at the kitchen bench. The toys on the floor. The small routines and in-between moments that make up your days. It’s where your kids feel most themselves, moving freely through spaces they know by heart.

These sessions aren’t about a perfectly styled house or asking everyone to sit and smile. They’re about documenting your family as you are, in the place that holds your everyday life.

The result is a gallery that feels deeply personal, not just beautiful photos, but a record of this season, in the home you lived it.

  • Choosing a time isn’t just about the light, it’s about what works for your family.

Beach sessions can happen at sunrise or sunset if you love that soft, golden light, sunrise is calm and quiet, sunset has that warm end of day feel. If witching hour at the beach is your idea of hell, morning beach sessions are a great option, brighter, a bit more lively, and often perfect for kids who are fresh and ready to go!

Creeks and hinterland locations work best in mid-morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer and more shaded.

In-home sessions are usually scheduled mid-morning, but I’m always happy to work around your family and choose a time that fits your day.

We’ll plan something that works for your real life, naps, sport, early starts and all.

  • If your kids are obsessed with surfing, skateboarding, love riding their bike or playing soccer feel free to incorporate those activities. Remember this is your story, come as you are and bring items that let fun unfold organically!

What to Wear?

Once you’ve figured out where you’re going, the next step is deciding what to wear. This is the fun part, I promise, and it’s where you can get a little creative.

Styling is more than just choosing clothes. It sets the tone for the entire session and outfits speak before anyone even moves.

Ask yourself how you want your photos to feel. Do you want something timeless and calm? Or do you love the idea of capturing this exact stage, your child in their favourite graphic tee, or the tutu they dress they refuse to take off?

Clothing isn’t an afterthought. It’s one of the tools we use to shape the feel of your images. The right pieces bring everything together without overpowering the connection.

If you’re unsure which direction to go, I’ll help you choose. We’ll make sure what you wear supports the story you want to tell, not distracts from it.

    • Lean into texture. Denim, linen, soft knits, anything with a bit of movement or weave adds depth and photographs beautifully without trying too hard.

    • Try to avoid big logos and busy loud patterns. A little is fine, but too many bold prints together can start to feel busy.

    • Skip bright white tees, particularly for men and boys. In strong natural light they can look harsh. Soft cream, beige, or gentle grey tones feel more natural and blend better with beach and bush settings.

    • Don’t be afraid of colour, choose one hero piece and let everything else support it.

    • Mum, Dad, everyone… there’s a good chance you’ll end up in the water or at least with sandy feet. So leave the fancy shoes at home and let your hair do its thing!

What to Expect?

I take a documentary approach, so I’m not there to line you up, tell everyone to sit still, or ask the kids to smile at me. There’s no awkward posing and no pressure to perform. You don’t need to “do” anything.

The more you relax and stay present with each other, the better your photos will feel. I’ll guide you when needed, but mostly I’m watching for the in-between moments, the way your kids reach for you, the laughs, the chaos, the cuddles. This is really an opportunity for you to bottle up some special time with each other.

  • Your session will run for 60-90 minutes, I don’t really put a time cap on it, we just shoot until there is no light left!

  • Most of the session unfolds naturally, but you’re never left wondering what to do. I’m always paying attention, to the light, to what your kids are drawn to, and to the moments that feel most like you.

That’s why where we photograph matters. Home, or a place that feels familiar, helps everyone settle in. Kids don’t try to get things “right,” they just move as themselves, and there’s no pressure for you either. It might look like books on the bed, wandering the backyard, sunset light at the beach, or exploring a favourite local creek, whatever feels true to your everyday.

Stay close to your kids. Follow their cues. Sit on the floor, scoop them up, let things unfold.

The more present you are, the more honest the images feel. I’ll guide you when it’s helpful, but most of the time I’m simply giving you space to be together.

The aim is a gallery that feels like your real life, not a posed photoshoot.

  • Yes. If a photo of everyone smiling is important to you, I’ll always do my best to get a few relaxed images.

But it isn’t the focus of my work.

Most of your gallery will be documentary, unposed, honest, and led by real life. A record of how your family moves, connects, and loves, not how you line yourselves up for a camera.

I don’t usually ask kids to smile on cue. The expressions that hit the deepest show up when they’ve got space to play, move, and be themselves. Those smiles are almost always shared with you, mid game, mid cuddle, mid chaos.

If what you’re mainly after is a full session of traditional “everyone looking at the camera” photos, my style won’t feel like the right fit, and that’s okay. I want you to choose what feels right for your family.

  • Your online gallery will arrive in your inbox 2-3 weeks after your session!

my philosophy

Two young children playing in a tree outdoors, one sitting on a branch, the other reaching up; sunlight filtering through leaves.
Three children outdoors with a fence and plants, one holding a baby.

Driven by a desire to encapsulate the journey of my daughters through their childhood, I've forged a distinct path in how I approach family photography.

What began as me capturing milestones, documenting my first born daughter as she grew before my eyes quickly turned into an obsession of documenting our life not just the polished moments but those wild and unpredictable moments too.

I love the idea of romanticising motherhood and family life, encapsulating the memories that happen in the house we call home, the adventures we take, and the connections we share. These elements define family, and I'm committed to capturing those moments through photography to portray the beautiful chaos of genuine, unfiltered family life.

Each session reinforces a simple truth: childhood is fleeting, family is precious, and every story is filled with its own magic. And through my lens, I aim to preserve it all.
