Time and Location

In-Home or Outdoors

It really comes down to what you want to remember about this chapter.

Home sessions are slow and cozy. Bare feet in the kitchen, soft light through the windows, sitting on the couch with your hands on your belly. It’s your space, your real life, exactly as it is. If you’re craving something intimate and low key, home is always the perfect option.

Outdoor sessions feel more open and free. Think beach walks, creek dips, salty hair and soft golden light. There’s room to move, breathe, and stretch out a little. If being outside feels like you, this option just makes sense.

For a look at specific locations and what might suit your family best, you can explore my location guide below.

Sunrise, Sunset or somewhere in between

When it comes to choosing a time, light plays a big part.

For beach sessions, sunrise and sunset are the favourites. The light is softer and more flattering, and the coastline feels calm and open. If you love that warm glow on your skin and a little breeze through your dress, those times are perfect.

Creeks and hinterland spots work best in mid-morning or late afternoon before sunset. The light filters through more evenly in those locations and feels gentle without being harsh.

We’ll choose a time that suits your energy, too. Whether you’re feeling fresh in the morning or prefer a slower afternoon pace, we’ll plan it around what feels good for you in this season.

What to Wear

Styling is more than choosing clothes. It sets the tone for your whole session.

Ask yourself, do you want your photos to feel timeless? Or do you love the idea of capturing this exact stage, your child in their favourite graphic tee, the well-worn tutu dress they refuse to take off?

Your oufit speaks. It tells part of the story before anyone even moves. Soft neutrals feel calm and lasting. Texture adds depth. A bold print or character shirt places your photos right in this moment of life.

Clothing isn’t an afterthought. It’s one of the tools we use to shape the feel of your images. The right pieces pull everything together without overpowering the connection.

If you’re unsure which direction to go, I’ll help you choose. We’ll make sure what you wear supports the story you want to tell, not distracts from it.

A few Styling Tips

Lean into texture. Denim, linen, soft knits, anything with a bit of movement or weave adds depth and photographs beautifully without trying too hard.

Try to avoid big logos and loud patterns. A little is fine, but too many bold prints together can start to feel busy.

Skip bright white tees, particularly for men and boys. In strong natural light they can look harsh. Soft cream, beige, or gentle grey tones feel more natural and blend better with beach and bush settings.

If you love colour, choose one hero piece and let everything else support it. One pop is plenty!

And always pack a spare outfit, especially for kids. Wet, sandy, muddy… it happens. Better to have options than stress about it.

What to expect

Maternity sessions still have that relaxed, documentary feel, but I won’t leave you standing there like, “So… what now?”

If your partner or kids are there, we’ll let it unfold. Walk a little. Stop for a cuddle. Laugh when your toddler runs off. I’ll guide you in small ways, but mostly I’m watching for the natural moments.

Coming on your own? I’ve got you. I’ll give you more direction so you’re not awkwardly staring at me wondering where to put your hands. We’ll move, shift your weight, play with your dress, adjust your hair. Nothing stiff. Nothing overly posed. Just enough guidance so you feel confident and comfortable.

It’s still real. Still honest. Just with a little extra support so you can relax and enjoy it.

Whether we’re in your home, out in nature, or somewhere meaningful to you, my goal is to create an experience where you feel comfortable, beautiful, and truly seen.

A final word

Focus on Each Other

Forget the camera is there. Enjoy your family time, laugh with your kids, share a cuddle with your partner, and just relish the moment. We’ll capture the real, candid essence of your family. If you want a photo with everyone looking at the camera, just let me know. Kids want your attention and they’ll be much more engaged if you are looking at them rather than telling them to look into the camera.

Embrace the Chaos

Kids will be kids, and that is the magic. Let them be wild, run around, and just be themselves. The most heartwarming photos often come from those spontaneous, joy-filled moments. Let them explore and play, because those are the moments that capture the magic of everyday life.

Be Present in the Moment

Let go of any expectations and fully immerse yourself in the experience. The most beautiful photos come from genuine connections and emotions. Whether you are sharing a quiet moment with your partner, or playing with your children being present will allow your true emotions to shine through, creating timeless memories.
